The United States Navy in World War II

Shipbuilding Programs and Contracts, 1938-1945

This portion of the Shipscribe web site contains four tables of data on all the contracts let by the U. S. Navy for construction of warships during World War II. The contracts are grouped by fiscal year and building program, as defined by appropriation acts and the individual directives from the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), and other officals and boards that caused the contracts to be let. Three additional tables are provided to list wartime contract cancellations, help locate individual ships (by hull number) within the four contract tables, and to explain the intricacies of wartime naval vessel authorization and appropriation acts.
