Proposed Battleship # 40 ... November 19, 1913

Preliminary design drawing for Battleship # 40, which was planned for construction in Fiscal Year 1915. This drawing represents the smaller of the two designs proposed on 21 November by the chiefs of the Bureau of Construction and Repair and the Bureau of Ordnance as reflecting their preferred concepts for the ship. This design resembles that adopted for Battleship # 38 (see Photo # S-584-041) but was 1,800 tons larger, having heavier armor (15-inch side compared to 13.5-inch).
This plan provides twelve 14-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 21 knots in a ship 645 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 97 feet in beam, with a normal displacement of 36,000 tons. Ultimately, however, Battleship # 40 was built to a design very similar to Battleship # 38, mounting twelve 14-inch guns.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).

The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
