Photo #: S-584-178 Preliminary Design Plan for a "11250 Ton Scout" Cruiser, Scheme "C" ... March 24, 1921 Preliminary design drawing for a scout cruiser. This design was one of many considered in the process of settling on the plans adopted for the Pensacola (CL-24) class of Fiscal Year 1926. This sketch was one of a set of five alternative designs (see also Photo # S-584-174 to Photo # S-584-177) presented to the General Board in March 1921. This design provided three twin 8-inch gun turrets, one forward and two aft. The drawing offered two alternative arrangements of armor protection, either employing an inclined protective deck or a flat protective deck. This plan differed from "Scheme # 1" (see Photo # S-584-174) in having one fewer 8-inch gun turret, permitting reduced size and cost. This plan provided six 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 34.5 knots in a ship 625 feet long on the waterline, 57 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 11,250 tons.
