Photo #: S-584-196 Light Cruiser ... Design # 1 ... Undated (about January 1925). Titled: "Profile for Est. of Scheme # 3" Preliminary design plan for a cruiser to be built under treaty limitations covering ships of up to 10,000 tons treaty displacement. This drawing represents a design that met most General Board characteristics for a ship that might be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design provided the same heavy main gun armament as the baseline design (see Photo # S-584-190) and a heavy anti-aircraft battery but sacrificed speed to obtain some armor protection and reduced weights. This design was one of many variations considered in the process of settling on the design adopted for the Pensacola (CL-24) class of Fiscal Year 1926. This plan provided twelve 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 32.5 knots in a ship 600 feet long on the waterline, with a normal displacement of 11,410 tons.
