Photographed circa August 1898 with her "gallant jackies" posing on the forecastle with their 60-pounder Civil War-vintage Parrott rifled gun.
The ship was loaned to the Navy by the City of Philadelphia for use in the coast defense system of the Delaware River.

USS Arctic (1898-1898)

A starboard quarter view taken in mid-1898.
The vessel appears to have been a double ender, with a small pilot house aft and capable of breaking ice in either direction. The turret of the Civil War monitor Canonicus is visible behind her.
