USS Schuylkill (AO-76)

Near the Norfolk Navy Yard on 24 April 1943.
In this ship, as an experiment, the smokestack aft was disguised as a big cowl and a dummy smokestack was installed amidships. The purpose was to persuade a U-boat skipper that the ship was a freighter rather than a more valuable tanker. The experiment was not repeated.
