USS Gorgona (ID # 2164), 1917-1919.
Originally the Panama Canal tug Gorgona (1915)

USS Gorgona, a 351 gross ton tug, was built at Staten Island, New York, in 1915 as the Panama Canal tug of the same name. She was taken over for Naval service during the first months of U.S. participation in World War I and placed in commission in July 1917. She operated out of Norfolk, Virginia, for the rest of the war, towing target rafts for Atlantic Fleet gunnery practice. In early 1919 Gorgona performed the same service out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. She went back to Panama in June 1919 and, after decommissioning, was returned to the Panama Canal Commission.
