SS Winifred, a 2551 gross ton freighter, was built in 1898 at Bath, Maine, for employment in the "tramp" trade. Later used as an oil tanker by the Gulf Refining Company, she operated in European waters with a civilian crew and a Navy armed guard in late 1917 and into the following year. The Navy took her over in June 1918 and placed her in commission as USS Winifred (ID # 1319). She continued in service between Welsh, English and French ports until December 1918, a month after the end of World War I fighting, then departed for home. USS Winifred was decommissioned in March 1919 and returned to her owners. Her subsequent commercial career lasted until 1936, when she was abandoned.
