In fleet lists 1862 as Transports de 400tx, to Transports pouvant faire le service d'avisos 1874, Transports avisos 1875, Transports pour le matériel et le service des stations 1880, and Transports avisos 1883.
Transports avisos were moved from the transport to the aviso category and reclassed as Avisos-transports 1884.

Bougainville (Training ship). Allier was converted into a corvette d'instruction for the Naval Academy at Brest in 1887 and took the name of her predecessor in 1890. Stricken 1895, converted into a dépôt d'instruction des apprentis gabiers (training hulk for apprentice topmen) without machinery but with a full ship rig, and moored here near the Brest château until 1907.
