EFC Harbor Tugs and Steel Barges

Mixed in with the orders placed in March 1918 for Design 1035 steel ocean-going tugs were two orders for a total of 8 Design 1036 steel harbor tugs. Thereafter the EFC shifted to wood for harbor tugs. It looked in its files for a design of 100-110 feet length, 25' beam, 12-13' depth and 600-700 hp but found none. Murray Watts, however, offered one which looked good and became EFC Design 1086. On 15 June 1918 EFC management ordered a new program of 20 wooden harbor tugs, to which it added 35 on 11 July 1918 and 45 more on 22 August 1918 for a total of 100. All were built to Design 1086, which thus dominated EFC harbor tug production even more than Design 1035 dominated its ocean-going tug production. Plans for this design were available for issue on 17 July 1918. Prices per tug varied from $127,800 to $160,000 each. Postwar cancellations took their usual heavy toll, and the total output of harbor tugs by the EFC ended up at 8 steel and 59 wooden.
