Steel Ship Contracts not in McKellar


The following contracts for steel ships do not appear in the McKellar list. All of the ships in these contracts were cancelled before completion. In addition the "sixth ship" of Design 1032 is identified and Design 1066 is given its own entry.


EFC Design 1019: Standard design, Ferris (Robert Dollar type), 8800 dwt

Patterson McDonald S.B. Co., Seattle, WA
Contract No. 100 of 7.11.1917 for 8 ships, EFC Hulls 777-784. Cancelled effective 12.2.1918 due inability to finance steel yard. EFC hulls 778-779 named WEST DURFEE and WEST LIANGA 19.3.1918 in error.

U.S.Steel S.B. Corp., San Diego, CA
Contract No. 171 of 19.1.1918 for 4 ships, EFC Hulls 1091-1094. No names assigned. Cancelled 15.4.1918. Yard not built, site to Scofield mid-1918 for concrete shipbuilding.

EFC Design 1032: Standard cargo, Bethlehem design, 12000 dwt

Bethlehem S.B. Corp., Alameda, CA
Contract No. 230 of 22.4.1918 for 2 ships, EFC Hulls 1574-1575.
Contract No. 301 of 30.4.1918 included 6 cargo ships, EFC Hulls 1682-2687 (three cancelled).

Five of the above hulls were completed (for which see main list), EFC hulls 2685-2687 were cancelled on 19.8.1919 (names were HANSKA, HARBINE, and HARCOURT). The "sixth ship" reported by McKellar was STEADFAST, Bethlehem Alameda hull 170, a requisitioned ship (see main list) that was transferred to the contract program and given the EFC number 1223, initiating this class.

As Sun hulls 1-2 (CHESTER SUN and SABINE SUN, both requisitioned). No EFC design number.

Sun S.B. Co., Chester, PA
Contract No. 452 for 8 tankers, EFC Hulls 2387-2394 prepared 8.1918 to replace 6 tankers previously awarded to Southwest SB (EFC 2210-2215) and replaced with cargo ships. Contract 452 was deferred pending negotiations on adjustments to other Sun contracts. Project cancelled by adjustment contract 514 of 12.11.1918. No names assigned.
