Probably shown in 1885 soon after completion.
Chatham became the repair ship USS Vulcan in 1898.

At the Boston Navy Yard in May 1898.
Chatham had been purchased by the Navy and soon became the repair ship USS Vulcan

USS Vulcan (1898-1899)

Probably shown in mid-November 1898 while surveying the wreck of the Spanish cruiser Infanta Maria Teresa at Cat Island in the Bahamas.
Vulcan had been towing the cruiser from Guantanamo Bay to Norfolk when a severe storm forced her to cut the tow line on 1 November 1898.
