USS Alpaco, a 2511-ton wooden-hulled cargo ship, was built for the United States Shipping Board at Moss Point, Mississippi. She was transferred to the Navy upon completion and placed in commission in mid-November 1918, a week after the Armistice ended the World War I fighting that had brought about her construction. Though assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, trials proved her unsuitability for Naval employment, and she remained inactive until decommissioned in December 1918. Returned to the Shipping Board at that time, Alpaco remained in their custody until scrapped in 1924.
