USS Rijndam (ID # 2505), 1918-1919.
Originally the Dutch Passenger Liner Rijndam (1901)
USS Rijndam, a 23,650-ton (displacement) transport, was built at Belfast, Ireland, in 1901 as the 12,527 gross ton Holland-America Line passenger liner of the same name. In company with dozens of other Dutch flag merchant ships, Rijndam was seized by the U.S. Government in March 1918. She was turned over to the Navy and placed in commission at the beginning of May 1918. Between that month and the end of World War I in November 1918, the transport made several voyages from the United States to France, carrying service personnel for employment in the war against Germany. Following the Armistice Rijndam began to bring veterans home from France, completing seven trips for that purpose by August 1919. She was decommissioned and returned to her owner in October 1919. Her subsequent commercial career lasted until 1929, when she was scrapped.
