USS L. K. Thurlow (ID # 2987-A), 1917-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Lewis K. Thurlow (American Freighter, 1913).

Lewis K. Thurlow, a 3101 gross ton (6610 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Newport News, Virginia, in 1913 as a sister to S.S. Peter H. Crowell (ID # 2987). Initially manned by the Shipping Board in the service of the Army, she transported Army cargo to Europe and was then assigned to the Army Coal Trade, based at Cardiff, Wales, and transported coal from England to French ports. She was transferred to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service at Cardiff on 25 November 1918. After two more coal trips she was released from the coal trade on 28 February 1919 and sailed from Bordeaux to Philadelphia with a cargo of Army airplane parts. Arriving on 17 March 1919, she decommissioned on 27 March 1919 and was returned to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous return to her owners. She was renamed Ajax in 1937 and was scrapped in 1951.
