USS Beukelsdijk (ID # 3135), 1918-1919.
Previously the Dutch freighter Beukelsdijk (built as Grangeburg in 1903)

USS Beukelsdijk, a 13,740-ton (displacement) cargo ship, was built in 1903 at Sunderland, England, as the 6801 gross ton "turret" type steamship Grangeburg. She became the Holland American Line freighter Beukelsdijk in 1916. Seized by the U.S. Government in March 1918 at San Juan, Puerto Rico, she was turned over to the Navy and placed in commission at that time. During the next three months she carried coal to ports in Brazil and brought coffee back to the United States. The ship made her first voyage to France in July 1918, but her return to the U.S. was delayed until November by machinery casualties, the great Spanish influenza epidemic and a coal bunker fire. Following repairs, Beukelsdijk steamed to Galveston, Texas, in January 1919, then carried a cargo of cotton and oil to France. In April she proceeded to Rotterdam, where she was decommissioned in mid-May 1919 and returned to her owner. She was wrecked near Bodo, Norway, on 29 January 1923.
