USS Ozaukee (ID # 3439), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, Ozaukee (American Freighter, 1918).

Ozaukee, a 4045 gross ton (8450 tons displacement) freighter, was completed at Long Beach, California, in September 1918. Placed in commission by the Navy in that month as USS Ozaukee (ID # 3439), in October the freighter departed San Francisco for Arica, Chile, to pick up a load of nitrates. This cargo was delivered at Jacksonville, Florida, in December. Ozaukee then carried a U.S. Shipping Board cargo from Charleston, South Carolina, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she loaded oil and tobacco for shipment to London, England. This voyage began in late January 1919, but when the ship was about 700 miles east of Philadelphia her steering gear carried away in heavy weather. Her crew rigged temporary steering gear and completed the trip, arriving at London in mid-February. In March she made the return voyage from London to Philadelphia. USS Ozaukee was decommissioned in April 1919 and returned to the Shipping Board. She remained in that agency's custody until scrapped in 1929.
