USS Edgecombe, a 6990 gross ton (13,903 tons displacement) cargo ship, was built in 1918 at Seattle, Washington, for the United States Shipping Board as the civilian freighter of the same name. She was transferred to the Navy upon, or soon after, completion and placed in commission in late December 1918. The ship left the West Coast for Norfolk, Virginia, in mid-January 1919, subsequently proceeding across the Atlantic to England and the Netherlands with a cargo of food to help relieve famine in distressed post-World War I Europe. In April 1919, following her return voyage to the United States, USS Edgecombe was decommissioned and returned to the Shipping Board.
