    This image was published at that time as one of ten photographs in a "Souvenir Folder" of views of and on board USS South Bend. The publisher was A.M. Simon, 324 E. 23rd St., New York City.
    Note the heavy kingposts, with a Sailor on a ladder in the foreground, and the small deck houses and life boats added as part of South Bend's conversion to a troop transport. The deck house at right is marked "Latrine".

    This mess hall appears to have been installed on one of the ship's 'tween decks, with a large hatch in its middle. Note the gratings fitted over the hatch, and the tables suspended from the overhead in the background.
