USS Prinz Friedrich Wilhelm, a 26,050-ton (displacement) troop transport, was built in 1907-1908 at Geestemunde, Germany, as the North German Lloyd passenger steamship of the same name. Seized by the Allies after the end of World War I, she was turned over to the U.S. Navy and placed in commission in late March 1919 for use transporting U.S. servicemen home from Europe. From April into August Prinz Friedrich Wilhelm made five trips from France and the U.S., carrying over 15,000 passengers, mainly U.S. Army personnel. She was decommissioned in November 1919 and transferred to the U.S. Shipping Board.
