USS Pretoria (1919-1919).
Originally German Steamship Pretoria (1897)

Pretoria, a 13,234 gross ton passenger liner, was built in 1897 at Hamburg, Germany, for commercial employment under the German flag. She was taken over by the U.S. Navy in late March 1919 and placed in commission at Cowes, England, as the U.S. Navy transport Pretoria (with no identification number assigned). In April the ship crossed the Atlantic to join the Cruiser and Transport Force, which was responsible for bringing home U.S. service personnel from the former European war zone. Between May and August 1919 Pretoria made four voyages from France to New York, carrying more than ten-thousand passengers. Transferred to the custody of the Third Naval District's Commandant in late September, USS Pretoria was subsequently decommissioned and, in late November 1919, turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board. She was scrapped in 1922.
