Soestdijk, a 6445 gross ton freighter, was built at West Hartlepool, England, in 1901 for Dutch owners. She was seized by the U.S. Government in March 1918, turned over to the Navy and commissioned late in that month as USS Soestdijk (ID # 3413). Serving with the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS), she was mainly employed to carry coal, manganese ore and other materials between Brazil and the U.S. East Coast. In June 1919 the ship crossed the Atlantic to Europe with a shipment of food. After delivering her cargo at Göteborg, Sweden, Soestdijk went to Rotterdam, where she was decommissioned in mid-July and returned to her owner.
