The Regulus II missile hangar being installed on 5 April 1957 aboard USS King County (LST 857), a Landing Ship, Tank being converted to an experimental guided-missile testing ship. YD-33 with its 150-ton capacity is doing the lifting. The rest of the conversion has not yet been begun.

USS King County (AG 157)
Underway with a probable dummy Regulus II missile on board. Note the Regulus II hangar forward and the simulated submarine sail behind the missile. Her deck and hangar layout was rigged to resemble the missile handling and launch fittings of USS Halibut (SSGN 587).

On 10 December 1958 just before for the first launch of the supersonic Regulus II guided missile from a surface vessel, off the California coast near the U.S. Naval Missile Center, Point Mugu, California.

USS King County (AG 157)
Launching a supersonic Regulus II guided missile subsequent to her initial launch of one on 10 December 1958. Note that the ship now has an anchor down. The earlier 10 December 1958 launch is shown in photo no. USN 1039413. The Regulus II missile was also fired from the diesel-propelled submarine USS Grayback (SSG 574), also with a jet-assist unit.
