In her original configuration as a wooden-hulled ocean minesweeper with two large minesweeping reels on supports behind the superstructure and four large minesweeping floats on deck aft.

USS Assurance (AG 521)
Shown in a photo received by NHHC in 1977. The minesweeping reels with the supports below them and all other minesweeping gear have been removed and replaced by an equipment van or structure probably containing the electronics for the AN/SQR-15 tactical towed array sonar system (TASS). A small deckhouse, possibly a TASS control station, has also been added behind the bridge just forward of the mast. Her single 40mm gun forward has also been removed.
