Underway on 16 September 1980 during her initial tour as Commander Middle East Force flagship, replacing the regular Middle East flagship, La Salle (AGF 3) while that ship underwent an extended overhaul.

Coming alongside in San Diego harbor on 12 August 1991 assisted by the commercial tug Cheryl Anne while flagship for Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet. With her fleet commander she changed her homeport from Hawaii to San Diego in August 1991.

Returning to Hawaii on 2 August 1998 at the end of exercise RIMPAC '98. She had just received a major overhaul in 1997-1998 in which she was fitted with the latest network-centric technology. The broadband HF discage antenna on her bow had been removed before 1997 and several radomes, probably satellite-related, had been added.

Arriving at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, on 24 March 2004 to serve as the 7th Fleet flagship while the regular 7th Fleet flagship Blue Ridge (LCC 19) underwent an extensive dry dock maintenance period. Coronado had departed San Diego, Cal., for this assignment on 5 March 2004. Her stern door had been removed and the stern plated over as seen here during her 1997-1998 overhaul.

Moored pierside at Naval Base Point Loma, San Diego, Cal., on 25 February 2005 during the ceremony for her second decommissioning and transition to the Military Sealift Command, this time reducing her to reduced operating status and ending her active career.
