SS Marine Eagle (later T-AK 255)

In use as a cargo ship during World War II with guns embarked. The large doors in her side are reminders of her original design as a tank carrier.

A small view showing the original rig of this unique ship. The goalpost foremast indicates she was built by Sun at Chester, Pa., the C4's built by Kaiser had pole foremasts. In contrast with Marine Fiddler (AK 267), her forecastle deck originally extended well aft of the bridge house.

USNS Pvt Leonard C Brostrom (T-AK 255)

A United Press photo dated 21 March 1954, probably provided by the Bethlehem Steel Co., showing the ship's new heavy lift rig. It consisted of a 60-foot mast, 80-foot booms, and 8 to 16-foot long cargo blocks. The rig allowed the ship to handle loads of up to 150 tons, making her the heaviest-lift ship under the U.S. flag.

A photograph by the Bethlehem Steel Co. dated 5 April 1954 showing the ship as converted by Bethlehem's 56th Street (Brooklyn, N.Y.) yard to a heavy lift ship with a capacity of single boom lifts of up to 150 long tons at the hook. A near sister, Marine Fiddler (AK 267) was similary converted at Bethlehem's Hoboken (N.J.) yard.
