USNS Corpus Christi Bay (T-ARVH 1)

At the Charleston Naval Shipyard, South Carolina, circa January 1966 after completing conversion. Two Destroyer Squadron 4 FRAM I destroyers including Johnston (DD 821) to the right are at the next pier with scaffolding on their masts.

This overhead view of the ship underway features the "admin pad" forward, the big periodic log HF radio antenna on the foremast, the ship's “J-boat” on deck alongside the starboard crane by the small freight elevator, and the huge hatch on the flight deck. The year 1967 is in pencil on the back.

Off Vung Tau, South Vietnam. with other vessels including a repair ship with a barracks barge alongside. Ajax (AR 6) Hector (AR 7) and Jason (AR-8) all served here at various times between 1968 and 1972.

Heading out of Corpus Christi with the southern approach to the harbor bridge ahead of her. If the date of 31 May 1973 handwritten on back is accurate she is probably enroute to Operation HULA HOOP 73, although the presence of the Army "J-boat" suggests the date may be earlier.
