USS Ortolan (ASR 22)
On builder's trials on 11 May 1972 in the Gulf of Mexico. Note the original configuration of the ship with a gun on each side forward of the bridge, probably 3"/50 singles, and with two salvage mooring buoys in their cradles between them, to be released into the water between the hulls. Before the conclusion of trials the guns were deleted and two buoys were mounted outboard on each hull.

USS Ortolan (ASR 22)
In drydock in 1974 at NSY Philadelphia for installation of a hull foil between the fronts of the two hulls. During a strong storm while undergoing sea trials she had suffered extensive hull damage from a large volume of water trying to pass between the two hulls, and the foil was designed to solve this problem. Note the folding deck hatches for the center well and other details of the area between the catamaran hulls.
