USS Elk River (IX 501)
Near San Clemente Island, Cal., in November 1967 supporting the Sealab III Project. She was testing the Personnel Transfer Capsule of the the Mark II Deep Diving System that is visible forward of her amidships well. Note also the Sealab III command and medical vans on deck on her port sponson. A similar capsule was also used in the two Pigeon (ASR 21) class submarine rescue vessels.
