Under the battleship crane at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, in January 1956. Cruisers and other ships of the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Hunters Point Group, are in the background. This was also the site of the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory, the US military's largest facility for applied nuclear research. Note the large "birdbath" nuclear fallout sampling platform on her foremast that had just been added for the upcoming "Redwing" test series.

Outbound via the Golden Gate at San Francisco in 1956 after being refitted at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for Operation "Redwing." The open structure on the bow may be an animal pen. The appearance of YAG 40 at this time was very similar.
