Photographed on 18 July 1951. Note the absence of empty gun positions on the bow and stern. The black mark below the foremast is on the ship, not the photograph.

Photographed by USS Atka (AGB 3) on 5 December 1957 in the open waters of Kainan Bay off the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctic during the 1957-58 International Geophysical Year. She now has an empty gun tub on the forecastle and a raised empty gun position near the stern. No guns were ever authorized for installation in these positions.

USNS Pvt John R Towle (T-AK 240)

With other ships of Task Group 63 on 27 August 1957 while stopped in heavy ice in Foxe Basin during operations to resupply DEW Line stations in northeastern Canada and Greenland. The ships at the upper left include the Coast Guard icebreaker Westwind (WAGB 281), another Victory type cargo ship, and probably a T2 type tanker, an LSD, and a Navy (gray) icebreaker. Alatna (T-AOG 81) was also present but is outside this image. Pvt John R Towle has a raised empty gun position near her stern for which no guns were ever authorized.
