USNS Sgt Morris E Crain (T-AK 244)

Photographed in April 1954 with YFN 276 from the Naval Supply Center, Oakland, Calif., alongside. She has all three of the empty gun positions then carried by MSTS Victory AK's, a wartime tub or platform for a 5" gun over the stern plus a tub for a 3" gun forward and a raised position aft that were probably added by the Navy circa 1952-53. Most of her sisters had only one or two of these positions, and they tended to be removed in later years.

Being assisted by the tugs Huntington (left) and J.F. Carroll Jr.. Huntington, owned by the Red Star Towing and Transportation Co., was built in 1951 while J.F. Carroll Jr., acquired after World War II by the Carroll Towing Co, was built in 1911 as Neptune and scrapped in 1958. Both operated in the New York area in the 1950s. The two empty gun positions visible here are not in a photo taken on 11 September 1951 and would have been added later.

Handling military cargo late in her career. She appears to have been the only MSTS Victory AK or AKV to have acquired a helo deck on her stern, and a platform has also been fitted on her radar mast to accommodate a second small device behind the radar antenna.
