USNS Norwalk (T-AK 279)

Transferring an A3 Polaris missile package on 10 September 1965 to Ethan Allen (SSBN 608) while alongside USS Hunley (AS 31) in Holy Loch, Scotland. Note that the missile is in a canister from which it is loaded into the submarine.

Hold No. 3, in the foreground, was reconfigured as a missile magazine with vertical stowage for 16 Polaris missiles in their canisters. One cover is missing showing the area below it.

The upper level of the missile magazine (compartment 4-58-0-M) on the 2nd deck level in No. 3 hold of "SS Norwalk Victory T-AK (FBM)" at Boland Machine & Manufacturing Co., Jourdan St. Wharf, New Orleans, on 18 December 1963. Note that, unlike an SSBN, the cargo ship did not have its own tubes for the missiles, using instead the missile canisters.

The middle level of the missile magazine (compartment 4-58-0-M) on the 1st platform level in No. 3 hold of "SS Norwalk Victory T-AK (FBM)" at Boland Machine & Manufacturing Co., Jourdan St. Wharf, New Orleans, on 18 December 1963.

The lower level of the missile magazine (compartment 4-58-0-M) on the tank top level in No. 3 hold of "SS Norwalk Victory T-AK (FBM)" at Boland Machine & Manufacturing Co., Jourdan St. Wharf, New Orleans, on 18 December 1963. The bottoms of the 16 missile canisters rested on this deck.
