On builder's trials on 23 June 1981 near Seattle, Washington. She was the only ship of the class to have a large discone antenna on the bow, the others had a smaller one amidships.

Being assisted by tugs in the harbor of Gaeta, Italy, on 18 February 2004 in preparation for a scheduled availability period. As one of her primary missions, Emory S Land deployed to Gaeta on a regular basis to provide repairs for other USN ships. Note the new dome over the bridge.

At the San Stefano base at La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy, on 26 March 2004 with the Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer Cole (DDG 67) alongside for maintenance and repairs. The tender provided logistical support and repairs to all Sixth Fleet surface and submarine assets.

Being assisted on 29 September 2007 by Navy harbor tugs Petalesharo (YTB-832) and Negwagon (YTB-834) as she departed her homeport at La Maddalena, Italy, for the final time. Emory S. Land left after eight years of providing mobile fleet support to submarines and surface ships in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

At Polaris Point, Guam, on 30 December 2010 with the Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine Hawaii (SSN 776) alongside. Hawaii was the first Virginia-class attack submarine to be moored outboard of a submarine tender. Note the dome over the bridge, which she did not have in 2009 but which Emory S. Land had by 2004.

Laid up at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility (NISMF), Portsmouth, VA., on 14 November 2015 nearly a decade after being stricken. She probably survived as a spare parts bin for her two active sisters. Photographed by Will Van Dorp during the winter relocation of the USMMA Sailing Foundation vessel Tortuga.

At Saipan on 21 October 2021 with the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine Hampton (SSN 767) alongside. The tender was on patrol conducting expeditionary maintenance and logistics in the 7th Fleet area of operations. The tug between the tender and the sub is from Cabras Marine, which is based at Guam.
